Frequently Asked Questions
Where/When do I take my child to get tested?
Students are tested at each individual school at a time arranged by the principal and the GT coordinator. It occurs during the regular school day. Permission to test forms MUST be received before hand. Testing occurs in the fall and the spring.
My child placed in GT, but I am not sure I want them to participate. Is this a requirement?
Parents/Guardians must give permission for their child to be in the GT program. If a parent/guradian does not want their child to participate, simply return the authorization form indicating "Do Not Authorize".
Do I have to turn in the Authorization Form?
The state requires that Authorization Forms be turned in giving permission for a student to participate in the GT program. If the form is not submitted, it is viewed like the parents/guardians do not want their child to participate in the program.
My child was placed in GT, now what?
In elementary, your child is pulled one day a week to spend at the GT Selcouth Center located at 505 Dixie Drive. Students are transported by bus in the morning and returned in the afternoon for regular dismissal. In middle school, students are pulled one day a month to spend at the GT Selcouth Center and are enrolled in PreAP courses at the middle school. In junior high and the high school, students are pulled one hour a month on their respective campuses to receive services from GT specialists. In addition, students are enrolled in PreAP/AP courses.
Once my child is placed in GT, do they have to be retested every year to remain in the program?
No. Once placed the student remains in the program as long as they are productive in the GT classroom and the regular classroom. We want children to be successful, so if it looks like they are struggling we want to make a plan to ensure success.
If I pull my child out of the GT program and decide I would like them to be back in the program, what do we have to do?
If a child is removed from the GT program, in order to be reinstated, the student must go through the entire Identification process and their information must go before the Placement Committee again.
If my child did not make GT this year, can they be retested?
Yes. Students may go through the Identification Process once a school year.
Are the overnight trips required?
No. These trips are educational opportunities that are completely optional.
May my child ride home with me once a field trip is over?
The school district's policy for school-sponsored trips is that students must ride the bus to and from (and all in between) the activity (activities). The only exception is when a parent has another destination before returning home. In this case, a note stating this must be signed by the school principal 48 hours before departure for the trip.
