Field Trips and Activity Days
The El Dorado Gifted and Talented Program offer as an option of overnight field trips in grades 3 - 6. These trips are designed to enhance the educational process and provide opportunities for learning that are not available in our area. In order to continue offering these adventures, the guidelines listed below should be followed:
1. The trips are viewed as a normal school day (just in a different location) and students are expected to remain with their group at all times. There are certain ideas and concepts all students are expected to learn on these trips. All school rules (behavior, dress code, etc.) apply to attendees and there are consequences if these rules are violated.
2. Parents are encouraged to attend these trips. Because it is important to make sure the students are at the forefront of all the learning, parents are asked to remain at the back of the line. It is important for parents not to leave the group with their child during a tour or event.
3. If parents are not returning home at the same time as the bus and they would like for their child to ride home with them, the child’s building principal MUST have a permission note signed by that principal. One copy needs to be in the school’s office, and one copy needs to be given to the child’s GT teacher at least two days before the trip’s departure date. Students may NOT ride home with someone other than a parent. This is district policy.
4. Cell phones are not allowed. This is district policy.
5. Although every attempt will be made to follow original itineraries, plans must be changed due to “acts of God” or other unforeseen barriers. When an event is cancelled, every attempt will be made to reimburse pre-paid expenses; however, some events and businesses have a “no refund” policy. In this circumstance, payments cannot be reimbursed. When cancellations have to be made, the GT staff will consider the entire group as a whole with regards to safety and finances.
6. Electronic devices (iPods, PSPs, DVD players, Nintendo DS, etc.) are not allowed during learning activities (day or night). Electronic devices are not allowed in some instances and locations. Students may use them only during travel or in the hotel/dorm. Your child assumes full responsibility for his/her electronic devices. It is the recommendation of the GT Department that these items be left at home. The GT teachers reserve the right to take up any devices if inappropriate behavior occurs.
7. If a parent who has a pre-approved letter, chooses to leave with his/her child and not participate in the activity, the child will be counted as absent at his/her respective school.
8. Parents are expected to follow the same guidelines as the students regarding the dress code, behavior, etc. No alcoholic beverages are allowed at any time. Trips are learning experiences for the students.
9. If a child has a medical condition and/or diagnosis that requires medicine or special considerations, the GT teachers must be notified before the day of the trip. If a child must take any medicine on the trip and the parent is not attending, a Medical Release Form must be filled out and returned to your child’s GT teacher at least two days before the trip’s departure. All medicine will be administered by the GT teacher, unless the child’s parent is attending.
10. The GT teachers reserve the right to call any parent at anytime to pick up his or her child for any behavior issues.
